Man this dude got AROUND in his little Lark!

October 19, 1959

Harold E. Churchill

President, Studebaker Packard Corporation

635 S. Main Street

South Bend, Indiana Dear Mr. Churchill:

I am the owner of a 1959 six-cylinder Studebaker Lark which I purchased in December 1958.

Saturday night, October 17th, I viewed a television commercial extolling the merits of the Dodge Dart automobile in that it was driven from Seattle, Washington, to Circle City, Alaska, in ten days.

In August of this year my wife and I drove our Lark from Washington, D.C., to Circle City, Alaska, in eleven days, and thereafter visited Mt. McKinley Park, Anchorage, Valdez, and Haines, Alaska, and returned to Washington D.C., via Duluth Minnesota and Mackinac Island, Michigan. Our total mileage for the trip was approximately 12,000 miles.

In crossing the United States to Shelby, Montana, we encountered temperatures in the upper nineties, and in British Columbia, Yukon Territory, and in some portions of Alaska we had long sections of road that were rough and, at times, either very dusty or muddy.

At the end of each day, we felt no fatigue, and the Lark's mechanical performance was excellent.

I give you this information for what it may be worth to your company from the standpoint of sales promotion.

Should you be interested in more detailed information concerning this trip, I shall be glad to furnish you with the same.

Thanking you in advance for your courtesy, I am,Very truly yours,

James P. Burns

Washington, D.C.

The Lark was a decent little car, but I have to suspect that few people were as surprised by how well it sold than Studebaker's own executives.

It really shouldn't have worked - they cut down a nearly decade old full-size sedan to make a compact on the cheap and it sold well enough to pull the entire company back into the black for a few years. Sometimes, people really do their best/most creative work when their backs are against the wall.

Under pressure can be a good place to be. I work my best with a hard deadline.

Just cool to see all these reviews.

Though I do have to call BS on 1 part of his review.

His Lark never set a tire on Mackinac Island - no cars allowed my friend.
